The Grace Child Center is sponsored by Grace Church, in cooperation with United Way, offering affordable child care for working parents. Founded in 1974, the Center has been a leader in quality child care in a multicultural context. Since August, 2007, the Center is also a Congregational Ministry Initiative of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana. The Center is open 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and applications for some classes are being accepted.

In June 2007, the Board of Grace Child Center announced the appointment of Marla Miller as Administrative Director of the Center. Marla brings outstanding qualifications to the job, including: training and experience in early childhood administration; starting up an Episcopal child care center; study in the School of Theology in the Diocese of Olympia, Washington; participating in and teaching a course at a community college on fundraising for nonprofits; a background in the corporate world where her responsibilities included fiscal and personnel management.  We welcome Marla to the city and to Grace Child Center.

Established in 1974 by Grace Episcopal Church New Orleans, Grace Child Center (GCC) is operated by Grace Child Center, Inc., a Louisiana non-profit corporation governed by its own board of directors. The Center is funded by modest sliding-scale tuition fees, United Way and other grants, and subsidies from Grace Church. GCC is strictly non-denominational and non-discriminatory in the provision of services to children and families, and our program includes care and mainstream experience for children with special needs. The Center offers child care and a developmental pre-school for children ages 2 to 5, and before and after-school care and tutoring for children ages 6 to 12. We also sponsor a summer camp, Our comprehensive program is designed to improve the emotional, social, language, cognitive, and physical development of children. Once our rebuilding is complete, GCC will provide services to 60 children.

Grace Child Center provides a safe, caring, bilingual (English/Spanish) environment. Children are provided with nutritious meals and snacks, their immunization records are monitored, and speech/hearing screenings are offered. The Center encourages parent involvement in educational, nutritional, and health projects. An expansion of Grace Church’s ministry through the Center will offer classes in parenting skills including nutrition information and in English as a second language.

For 32 years, GCC provided for the needs of the children in our area. With our reopening in January 2008 in an improved state-of-the-art setting including a children’s kitchen garden, we look forward to many more years of even greater success.
